PCOS and Thyroid Health | Hypothyroid and Hashimoto’s

This month, I contributed a guest post to the esteemed Hypothyroid Mom blog. Dana Trentini is an activist who focuses on thyroid health, and in particular has an interest in the impact of thyroid health on women of childbearing age. She asked me to contribute a post to her blog on the topic of PCOS and hypothyroidism. I had read many times about this interesting connection, however I wondered if there was new research that may have been released. As such, I dove deep into my favourite resource, “PubMed” to see what might be out there.

I knew already that the incidence of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease, was increased in women with PCOS. And that women with PCOS had similarly elevated cardiovascular risk markers to women with hypothyroidism. Interestingly, I learned that there was new information outlining a potentially tighter range for thyroid function (using the marker TSH) for women with PCOS. Women with PCOS achieved better metabolic control when their thyroid function was optimized.

This comprehensive post is a great way to learn about the specific details of the relationship between PCOS and thyroid disease. This article got 1.1k likes on Facebook so many people found it helpful. Please share – it contains important information for women of reproductive age!
